color physics: Project Highlight
expanding creatures
LET'S MAKE EXPANDING CREATURES!
Do you like surprises? What about making your own surprises?
This project has a secret. Several secrets actually!
With a simple fold and clever planning, you can design a drawing that seems sweet and simple, until it’s inner
surprise is revealed! In addition to the creature hidden within each drawing, this project secretly exercises spatial skills and creative thinking while simultaneously emphasizing the importance of planning ahead. Plus, kids can probably find everything they need for this project laying around the house. Boredom busters don’t get much better than that!
Here’s a little taste of one of the projects we do in Color Physics to really get the creative juices flowing!
Or, if your child wants to build with friends and you don’t want a table full of marker mess-ups, just bring them to Spring Break camp March 26-30. We’ll be building these and many other wonderful projects. Learn More

1. Start kids off by showing them how to make a simple Z fold. Fold paper one way the other.
2. For kids who are easily frustrated, suggest they draw pictures lightly with pencil first, until they are sure their design works the way they want it to. TIP: The easiest way to do it is to draw the folded up picture first as a complete picture, then open it up and fill in the connecting details. 3. Once their design works with pencil, suggest they trace the pencil lines with markers, and color in their designs. |
4. Challenge kids to try folding their paper in different ways to make their creature expand in larger or different ways (such as Z fold next to a backwards Z for a double-wide expansion).
5. As you kids to walk you through their process when they show off their completed Expanding Creature! Taking the time to listen to how they approached a task encourages kids to give deeper thought to the process. And as great as the final result may be, it's all about the process of getting there! If their Expanding Creatures did NOT turn out as expected, encourage them to recycle paper and try again. Making mistakes and learning from them is a wonderful and crucial step in the tinkering process. There is serious brain growth in figuring out HOW different parts work together. If your kid loves to make fun projects with friends and you don't want a table full of marker mess-ups, just bring them to Renegade Tinkering! We'll provide the community and clean up the mess! |
